Live in a City? 3 Tips to prevent your skin from suffering from pollution.

Living in a city is glamourous, what with all the lights, food options, dating, and of course just the vast amount of people. I grew up in a sleepy village 50 miles north of New York City, and moved to Hell’s Kitchen when I was 19, and been there ever since. Sure, don’t get me wrong the city is awesome, but have you ever wondered what this does?

Let's be real, these things are all over the place spewing out grey smoke and fumes, and are always situated quite close to corners and sidewalks where people are stuck waiting for the light to change. 

It got me thinking about the whole concept of living in a city. Sure, I'd love to be oblivious. Not unlike this couple. 

But I had to know for sure, what does pollution do to me, and am I really hurting myself by living in the city. 

So I dug around and found that even outside of none health issues like lungs etc., pollution is known to accelerate skin aging. A study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology compared women living in urban and rural environments over 24 years and found that those exposed to increased pollution had more dark spots and wrinkling. Microscopic specks of smoke, soot, acid and other pollutants are released into the atmosphere from sources like fires, construction sites, cars and power plants. Government regulation has resulted in decreased emissions over the past few decades, but the air surrounding us is still far from pristine. I mean after all, have you been on the subway lately? It's not like government has got the best strategy for handling our needs. 

More specifically, pollution does the following to your skin: 

  • Pollution dehydrates your skin. Causing dryness. 
  • Pollution breaks down collagens which leaves your skin more vulnerable.
  • Pollution is proven to inflame your skin, causing loss in elasticity and firmness.

So what do we do about it? 

I know I don't want to look like this by the time I'm 30.  

So the real work has to be daily. Here's three steps:

  1. Cleansing - Simply washing off the grime and junk every evening before bed. 
  2.  Neutralize it - basically it's treating polluted skin. If you walk around NYC, trust me your skin is being destroyed. Treat it nightly with a good serum filled with antioxidants. 
  3. Protect - create a shield before going out, that will protect your skin all day, so that you can keep your young looking skin healthy until long into your 50's and on.
